Everyone has to start somewhere. Our fantastic YES youth-friendly employers were all given a chance to make a start in their chosen industries, so we’ve compiled a list of the advice that some of these employers want to pass on to the young job seekers of Dunedin!
Denise (Bedpost): “Every job has value to society. Don’t think you are above a job.”
Kate (NZME): “It’s all about coming in and seeing us, and giving us a snapshot of who you are. We want someone who isn’t afraid to fail and willing to give everything their best shot.”
Christal (Aurora on George): “Be punctual and respectful - Your boss didn’t have to give you the job.”
Josh (BLK Sport): “You shouldn’t close yourself off to the opportunities that are presented. Have the courage to trust yourself… Even if its a job that you don’t enjoy - try your hardest to find a positive or something to learn within that job.”
Clinton (Burns Lodge at Holy Cross): “If you work hard, you're committed and focused, you can go as far as you like. It is the motivation and drive that will get you there.”
Janine (Media-works): “Front up! Show that you are interested in trying the industry out.”
Ryan (Timely): “Work on the things that you are most passionate about.”
Daniel (Platinum Recruitment): “Be useful, find a way to make a difference.”
Ken (DKW): “Have confidence in yourself. Know where you want to be so you end up doing something you enjoy.”
Domi (OAR): “If you know where you want to go, you can make little steps that all add up to something. Volunteer, get out there and get involved. Get as much experience as you can.”
Mike (Otago Polytechnic): “It’s about having an open mind, being prepared, and also following your dreams.”
A lot of the advice is related to putting yourself out there in vulnerable situations and not being afraid of failing or getting rejected. It is all about showing you are keen to get your foot in the door. It is not always about having a degree but rather showing that you are willing to push yourself to the boundaries to show that you have the motivation to get out there and work. Test the limits, always be out to impress and show that you are the right choice for the job.
