This month we asked one of the owners of Firebrand, Bex Twemlow, some important questions...
What do you like to see within a Cover Letter?
Short - to the point - why you are applying, what your primary interests are and how they align with the role. NO spelling and grammar issues ✅
What part of a CV jumps out at you? (Short, mixed media, past jobs, achievements, intro etc.)
The personal statement! I want it to be unique and crafted by the person, not generic. If you can expand on what was learnt or undertaken in your previous role, then that's a bonus. If you're a designer or marketer, add a touch of class….in your own way. Design it if you are a designer.
When you interview a potential candidate, what are you looking for?
Comfort in the uncomfortable, eye contact, and a sense of ease if talking about something specific to you. Please leave the ego at the door. If you don’t know an answer or don’t have an example say that but then perhaps address what you might do in the situation or in answer to the question. Don’t bag your current/past employers. Address any gaps openly and how you intend to resolve that. Be eager!
If you were a rangatahi, what opportunities would you take advantage of from Firebrand and why? Business walkthrough, coffee date, desk shadowing, industry entry discussion, mock interview or skills review...
I would take advantage of any and all opportunities on offer from anyone offering them! It's a great way to identify where you do and don’t want to work, and explore industries you might not know much about - you never know what might spark your interest.
If you had to give rangatahi any piece of advice, what would you say?
It's tough to hear you aren’t right for a role or providing what an employer is looking for. Don’t take a no as a personal slight though - they perhaps aren’t right for you too. Be open to learning and soak up what is on offer if given internship opportunities. Try to seek a role that aligns with your passion/interests so it won’t feel like “work” as such! Be realistic too - good things take time. Good luck!
