How to Write a Great CV

By Jake McKay | Posted: Wednesday April 27, 2016

Your CV is the first thing a future employer will look at whenhiring new people. In order to get that all-important interview, we've put together a few tips and tricks to help you build a polished CV to help you get a foot in the door!

1) Tailor the CV For the Job You're Applying For

You should always make sure you change the content of your CV so it reflects the nature of the job you're applying for. The best content in a CV for a Hospitality job would be very different from that of Customer Service role, so make sure you edit your CV to best reflect the job at hand.

2) Use Skills Relevant To The Role

Your CV should showcase the relevant skills you have that will set you apart from other applicants. Make sure you present skills that the employer can identify as important for the role they're employing for. Check out sites such as CareersNZ for some great tips to identify skills you might like to include in your CV.

3) Keep it Simple with Plain Fonts.

The employer will likely have a pile of CVs of those who have applied for the job. Make sure yours is easy to read, otherwise you run the risk of the employer putting yours straight in the 'No' pile!

4) Proofread Over and Over Again!

Spelling and grammar issues are one of the most common reasons for employers rejecting a CV. The best way to make sure your CV is free from any mistakes is to proofread it multiple times and to get one of your friends or family members to read it too. There are also online tools such as Grammarly to pick up on any errors you've made.

5) Convert To PDF Before Emailing or Printing!

A simple step that is often missed, changing the format of you CV to PDF will ensure the formatting does not change and it gets to the employer looking exactly like it does on your screen. If you're not sure how to do this, click here for a step by step guide.

6) Use an Online Generator.

If you don't feel confident making your own CV from scratch, the best thing to do is use an online generator. CareersNZ has a great online tool to do this - check it out here!
