Supporting Youth in your workplace

Some tips for employers on how you can best support youth.

When you hire a youth, there’s a good chance that it is their first job or any kind of workplace experience. Because of this, your new employee may lack confidence, and find it difficult to feel part of the team of more experienced staff.

We’ve compiled a list of tips and helpful suggestions on how to best support young staff -

  • Ensure you have an induction process to welcome the youth into your workplace. This should include a full outline of the values and expectations of your organisation.

  • Take the time to discover what best inspires and motivates your young employee, they may show this differently to older employees.

  • Provide consistent feedback to keep youth employees on track, developing their skills and knowledge, and feeling positive about their progress.

  • Arrange for young new staff members to work alongside more experienced employees while learning the ropes. This will reinforce expectations as well as help the employee learn how to perform tasks.
